This course aims to address the educational disparities that exist within and between communities and allows for the creation of positive social change. allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of course content by integrating theory with practical experiences it equips students with learning experiences, promotes engagement with the community, increases social awareness, and helps build interpersonal skills as well as practical skills. It as well provides members of the community with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary for self-sufficiency and sustainable development. Relevance: Community-based education is tailored to the unique needs and context of a community the aim of community diagnosis is to develop strategies to address local health needs and improve the overall well-being of the community Community-based education and community diagnosis have been shown to be effective in addressing health needs and helps to contribute to the development of healthy communities and create a more sustainable and equitable society. The facility is located in Mzimba District about 60 km West of the district headquarters, Nyabanda Memorial Clinic (name of the facility) is 15 km away from the nearest government health centre. The clinic consists of consultation room, pharmacy, treatment room, post natal ward, labour ward, short stay ward, reception and resting rooms. Services on offer: OPD Maternity Labour and delivery Minor surgical treatment Family Planning HIV test and counselling ANC We see about 15 to 20 patients per day on average. The clinic has a Senior Clinical Officer, 2 Nurses, a cleaner and a guard The Medical Director as a consultant. Common conditions include; Malaria (complicated & non complicated), Bacterial Pneumonia, viral pneumonia, Gastroenteritis, Neonatal Sepsis, SCD, STI's(Gud, LAP, UD, AVD), minor injuries, Hypertension, Asthma, Puerperal Sepsis, CVA/Stroke, Febrile Convulsions, Bronchitis/Bronchiolitis, Gastritis Immunization coverage is impressive and good The program is under government, we have an HSA in the area responsible this. The community is well organised through traditional leaders, district council and politicians Village Health Committee coordinates all health issues with relevant authorities. Some common conditions in the area: Malaria, sexually transmitted infections, pneumonias, diarrhoea diseases, Gastritis, The community uses water from the boreholes People have specific areas in their household where they dispose of the waste. The nearest government health centre is about 15 km away, thus where some patients go but the HSA is stationed within the area. Banja la Mtsogolo(an NGO) provide their outreach reproductive health services on monthly basis.
